If you’ve read some of our recent posts you will know that Angelique’s No. 1 and my No. 2 are on the brink of leaving primary school. Things are coming to a celebratory close, and we were treated to the culmination of weeks of rehearsals yesterday at the fantastic first night of Robin Hood and the Sherwood Hoodies.
Year 6 children played the main parts, with Years 4 and 5 supporting them. The casting was perfect. Angelique's No. 1 and my No. 2 were cast as a slightly ridiculous robbing duo, Grabbit and Bolt. They relished the chance to be truly silly for a couple of hours – all in the name of drama! Biased though I am, I think they did a very good job of being silly (what else should I have expected?), delivering their lines and gags with delicious glee, creating some crazy facial contortions and indulging rather too happily in the slapstick humour.
The younger children from Years 4 and 5 traditionally sit facing the audience for long periods of time during these productions, showing the tedium of not being more involved as they stare at the ceiling picking their noses. This year these children were squealing with pleasure at the audience's reaction, seeing their parents’ mirth make the benches they sat on shake and creak, as they snorted and mopped tears of laughter away.
