But I’m allergic to cats…So we got a puppy instead. A very cute puppy. And guess what…He’s a boy! In a house full of boys you might think I’d like a female dog to even things up a bit. But no. I wanted another little boy to add to the boisterous chaos.
Now bear in mind I had just got my youngest two children into school. I had some freedom, not just for work, but for life. For me. After 10 years of looking after my children without a break or any help it was like a little piece of heaven. So what, I hear you ask, would possess me to do something that would take me back to needing stair gates in my house, back to the world of toilet training and cleaning up poo, (this time without the benefit of nappies), sleepless nights or unreasonably early mornings, and not being able to leave the house for more than a couple of hours at most?
Well according to Becky’s No. 2 son, it’s because I’m doubly mad. I would tend to agree. But it’s a good kind of mad. A tired but happy kind of mad. And as a friend pointed out, your dog will always be happy to see you. Always love you. Never answer back or tell you that you are the meanest mummy in the world because you won’t allow a visit to the sweetie shop after school. Or look at the food that you put in front of them and exclaim ‘that’s revolting!’.
I know they all love me really. And I love my boys. All of them. And that includes the one with the waggly tail.
