Tourism is obviously a vital part of their industry and so it was good to see that everything seemed to be operating as usual, on the surface at least, in spite of the worries so many people over there must be facing.
We spent one week in a lovely villa in Kalathos near Lindos in Rhodes. It was perfect for our needs and well located so we managed to visit all the beaches and places we wanted to go to. A highlight for my children, (not so much for me), was Faliraki water park. Having done my time in Faliraki, in the form of a season of misspent youth when I was 18, I had no real desire to go back. And a couple of the people in the water park made me truly ashamed to be British. However, the boys loved it, the slides were great fun and thankfully we managed to avoid the Faliraki nightlife, although I did get intensively questioned as we drove past a couple of strip clubs as to what exactly they were. Nice!
For anyone who is travelling to Rhodes in the future, here are my highlights:
St Paul’s Bay – beautiful bay with a gorgeous restaurant. Get there early to get a sun bed otherwise there is nowhere else to sit and you will have to leave!
Lindos beach is beautiful and wander around the old town and eat in one of the many restaurants with lovely views of the acropolis or across the bay.
The other bay we visited in Symi was Agia Marina. This was very pretty with great snorkelling. I particularly enjoyed it as I got to meet the very lovely travel presenter Simon Reeve. When I say ‘meet’ the circumstances were less than ideal. My family queue jumped to get a table in the taverna. And he was the only person in the queue. Then when I went over to talk to him on the beach later I managed to totally disturb his peace by waking him up. Stunning work Angelique. Anyway, he was the perfect gentleman and accepted all apologies for the queue jumping and was more than happy to have a photo taken even though he had been so rudely disturbed. He has a new series coming out on Greece so look out for it! Having greatly enjoyed his series on the Caribbean I will be very much looking forward to this next one.
So holidays over and back to reality with the ongoing and deepening migrant crisis which Becky referred to in her last top tips.
